WELCOME TO THE BEST CLUB AT UBC! This year, DSC is revamped and better than ever!
In the past, DSC has been labelled as a “Honger” club. And now, some people are labelling us as a “CBC” club. While both are true to some extent, neither is our goal. We hope to create a club that has people from BOTH cultures and mostly people in that can identify with BOTH. You may think that the reason we are doing this is so we could attract more members. I’d be lying if I said that’s not true. HOWEVER, our goal is to create a really “down to earth” club, one that doesn’t have to label certain groups of people Honger or CBC. Some of you would say that this is naive and practically impossible. Because of the stance that we have taken, I’ve found that it’s a lot harder then I thought it would be. I still think it’s worth it though. As long as people keep in mind that they should be trying to connect with people that are different then themselves they’ll find that they aren’t all that different after all.
For myself, instead of differentiating the different types of people (eg. Hongers, Bananas, etc.), I personally would like to see a mix of the different types of subcultures. Hongers may eat rice more often than Bananas but Bananas probably like rice just as much as Hongers. Adding to that, I believe that a more multicultural club is the way to go. Many benefits can come from having a diverse mixture of people. For example, if a Banana wanted to go to a restaurant where the menu is in purely Chinese, a Honger could lend a helping hand by translating the menu. Trust me, it is VERY inconvenient not knowing how to read or write Chinese. I believe that DSC is all about making CONNECTIONS and bridging the gap that we have created for ourselves. People that have multiple cultures in them can have fun in more social situations. The whole point of a club like DSC is for members to CONNECT, COMMUNICATE, AND COOPERATE (and possibly copulate… if you’re down with that). If a person can adapt to more social situations, they’ll be able to enjoy more of what DSC has to offer!
This year I’m really excited about our directors’ board. They’re more determined than ever to make DSC better than last year. There are tons of events that are in the making and tons more that will come later on in the year. Read the other articles from the other directors to see what they have to say!
So, that’s basically what I have to say about our club. If you want to find out more, read what the other directors have to say, or you could email me. Better yet, JOIN AND YOU’LL FIND OUT!

Welcome to DSC! With this being my last academic year at UBC, it is my pleasure to be part of DSC for the last time. Being involved with DSC for 3 years has made my university life a memorable one. It hasn’t been all about school, homework and studying, rather it’s been combined with new friends, support and fun because of DSC. Beginning as an Executive, to Director and now the Treasurer, I understand the importance of teamwork if this club is going to be successful. I am excited to work together with the new executive team in creating original and memorable events for everyone to enjoy. As this year’s treasurer, I will put forth my best effort to make this a successful year once again. I look forward to meeting all you new members and executives. Prepare yourselves for a fun and crazy year!

It is my pleasure to be the secretary of DSC this year. My job as secretary is not only to take minutes at meetings, book rooms for various events, and send out hundreds of UNannoying emails/texts/facebook messages about our meetings, but also, to help other members in Top 5 and directors deal with tedious errands! I am a fourth year FNH student and this is going to be my third year in DSC. I first became close with my current best friends through this club and have created many other friendships and connections through all the amazing events. Clearly, this club has become a meaningful part of my University life and beyond. I hope that you can say the same as a member, an exec or a D-Board member. Finally, DSC helped me realize that as a Canadian born Chinese, it is important and rewarding to identify with your own heritage.
